Kofi’s Design Background?

I don’t think I have a design background, personally, but, from the age of 12, I came to realize I was good at recreating cartoon images, like from comics, on paper, by just observing them from books, magazines, internet and redraw them by hand, using a pencil on paper.

That’s something I’m very good at. I’m very good at recreating drawings, designs and unusually, websites, by simply looking at them and analyzing them.
I tend to figure out how the person who drew them or how a website runs, was made and it makes it very easy for me to recreate an exact or similar copy. I dunno if that’s a talent or not but it’s a good feeling to have it.

Where does he get his inspirations from?

My inspirations are mainly achieved from my imagination most of the time. I tend to think of concepts when I feel like creating a new design piece, and I may sometime sit down to think of something cool, or sometimes, I may have something cool in my head, or sometimes not, but would start playing around in Photoshop, then eventually, it develops into cool concept to it.

I wouldn’t say I get my inspirations from music but I enjoy listening to music always when I’m creating something. I think it helps me from going too deep into the design or I think it helps my mind in some way, even though it looks like listening to music and trying to concentrate on a design is quite confusing and hard to concentrate, it works for me. I’ve always done so.

Alternatively, I may see a design somewhere online which really inspires me, but mostly, instead of trying to recreate what I’ve been inspired from or try to do something similar, I instead focus on the use of colors, like what colors the Artist used to make the piece outstanding and beautiful, how they blended in colors to achieve a certain effect, and also certain shapes.

Most of the times, I focus on the color schemes and experiment with them on my own personal pieces. I like colors a lot so when I see certain blended colors in other people’s work, which I may have not tried out before, I tend to take that and experiment the color schemes on my works.

Other times, I simply do anything for fun, or sometimes, I may be traveling and might come across a certain line of word on a billboard or some sort and that sentence may push some concept ideas into my head, then I give it a go.

Kofi’s design process?

Everything I do is done entirely in Photoshop. I’d like to say I use Illustrator but from the many times I’ve tried to use it, I can’t come to terms with it. Although Illustrator is best for vector and smooth things out, I can’t use it at all. I obviously know how to integrate through it and do a few things but I never use it for any of my designs.

I started off as an amateur, with Photoshop and have developed into being able to somehow achieve what I may achieve using Illustrator. My design process basically starts off with a design concept. Once I’m set with a concept, I start off with a large enough canvas, at 300dpi, then first thing I do before I do anything of the concept, I build up my background. It’s the first thing I always do and I think everyone does that, but yeah, I may spend at least 30 minutes building my background on different layers, once I’m set and happy with it, I start of with my concept.

Everything in my designs, if i was to be specific, every shape that sums up my designs are always done with the “Pen Tool”. It’s by far my favorite tool and it’s a life saver. I make my shapes with the pen tool, then I go on with inputing colors, which normally, it consists of different color tones to give it depth and a 3D feel, so for example, if I was to use a blue color, I’d use light blue, mid blue, dark blue, all on separate layers, then I’d layer mask some parts off to achieve the 3D color look i have in my designs. That’s pretty much my design process, pen tool and colors. One important thing I do is I don’t rush my designs, I may start a design, work on it for at least 2 or 3 hours, run out of ideas, close it, come back to it some hours later, sometimes days or weeks, then continue, because, I then have fresh ideas and it builds up my design.

Designers he loves?

Wow, I think this could be a long list. My first inspiration for when I started designing back in 2008 was m0sk He was, and will remain one of the best designers and inspirations out there for loads of people including me.

He was someone you would idolize for their talent and for their achievement. Apart from him, there are quite loads of other people I like, for their Art. I have and like loads of inspirational artists, from digital painters to digital artists. Everyone is unique and when they get to a certain point where their Art is simply beautiful to look at, you have to idolize and appreciate them because they have achieved something.
